Wight Shipyard Co is one of Europe’s leading specialists in high-speed craft and aluminium shipbuilding. Based in East Cowes on the Isle of Wight, we deliver cutting-edge vessels for UK and international operators — including passenger ferries, crew transfer vessels and commercial craft.

As a Business Administrator apprentice with Wight Shipyard, you’ll be immersed in an exciting and supportive environment where you’ll contribute to real projects and learn from the best in the business.

About the Role:

We are looking for two enthusiastic and motivated Business Administration Apprentices to join our team at Wight Shipyard Co. This is an excellent opportunity to gain practical experience while working towards an industry recognised Business Administration qualification.

During your apprenticeship, you will rotate through a variety of business departments, giving you a broad understanding of how the company operates. You will work alongside experienced colleagues, develop valuable workplace skills, and build a strong foundation for a career in business administration.

Departments will include:

  • Business Improvement and Systems
  • Finance
  • Office Administration
  • Project Management
  • Additional departments (to be confirmed)

Key Duties and Responsibilities

As a Business Administration Apprentice, your responsibilities will include:

  • Supporting day-to-day administrative tasks across different departments.
  • Learning and using business systems and office software.
  • Assisting with document preparation, filing and record keeping.
  • Supporting finance activities, including data entry and maintaining accurate records.
  • Assisting project teams with administration and coordination tasks.
  • Helping improve business processes and systems.
  • Communicating professionally with colleagues and customers.
  • Attending meetings where appropriate and taking notes or preparing documentation.
  • Maintaining accurate and confidential records.
  • Completing apprenticeship coursework alongside your workplace training.
  • Carrying out additional administrative duties as your skills develop.

About You:

We're looking for someone who is:

  • Enthusiastic, positive and eager to learn.
  • Organised with excellent attention to detail.
  • A confident communicator with a friendly and professional manner.
  • Reliable, punctual and committed to completing their apprenticeship.
  • Comfortable using computers and keen to develop their IT skills.
  • Able to work effectively as part of a team.
  • Willing to take responsibility and build confidence in a professional office environment.
  • Educated to a good standard in English and Maths.

Location and Travel:

The role is primarily based at our East Cowes site. However, occasional travel to our offices at Town Quay, Southampton may be required. Any travel undertaken as part of your role will be completed during working hours, with travel time paid.

 

Apprenticeship Standard:

  • The duration of the Business Administrator apprenticeship will be between 18 and 24 months + 3 months for the end point assessment.
  • Functional Skills in Maths and English are required and if not previously achieved GCSE grade 4/C or above.

·         Alongside your practical daily work, you’ll take part in off-the-job training hours—dedicated time within your working week to develop your knowledge, skills, and behaviours through any new/online learning.

Working Week:

  • 40 hours per week.
  • Over 5 days with a shorter day on Friday.

Wage:

·         £10.85 per hour
