Assistant Restaurant Manager

Job Posted: 9 August 2026

Job Start Date: September

The Terrace is the only Isle of Wight restaurant listed in the Michelin, AA, Good Food and Harden’s guides. With the departure of two long-serving team members we will have a full time role for an experienced leader in our Front of House team from September.

Our service style is casual but structured and attentive. We operate a system of table and section ownership with a specific customer journey our managers are responsible for overseeing and troubleshooting during a shift.

Our bookings are very carefully managed with 10-15 guests seated at 15 minute intervals to allow seamless, manageable and low-stress services. Our managers are responsible for managing these bookings to ensure goals are achieved, guests are delighted and team members are looked after.

We publish rotas well in advance and plan our menus, drinks, systems and training schedules up to three months ahead so our team know where they are and what to expect at all times. Our managers all give input into these elements of service and help implement them via tills, recipes, stock management, writing rotas and going basic accounts and bookkeeping.

Our culture is highly positive and focused on equality for team, guests and owners. We expect focus, hard work, accountability, attention to detail, a genuine desire to make guests and other team members happy, a constant wish to learn and a willingness to absorb the mistakes that are a natural part of that learning.

We are a happy team but not a party team. We take career development seriously and have created some of the best hospitality leaders currently working on the Island since we opened in 2020. Our current restaurant manager was named as one of the Rising Stars of 2025 by Restaurant Magazine.

Hours are typically 45 per-week year round. In summer we open seven days in Winter we open 4.5. Tips are good and shared under a no-National Insurance Tronc by the team themselves with no input from the owners and no service charge levied. The role is full time with no reduction in salary for the off-season.

Despite your more senior experience, your role with us will initially begin in running food and drinks and clearing tables. We never, ever drop inexperienced leaders into senior roles without showing them how we do things from the ground up. In most cases the learning curve is very quick but always welcome as it means you can slowly build knowledge and confidence in a lower-pressure on-service role.

Once you know all our tables, booking patterns, service systems and menus you’ll start working bar shifts. Once you know all our systems for drinks, clearing, stock management and coffee-making you’ll start to own tables. Once you’re leading sections with confidence, you’ll begin to shadow shift leadership, then, when you’re ready, we will give you full leadership responsibility of shifts which is where we’ll want you to stay as a key support for our Restaurant Manager.

To apply for this role you will need to have held some form of leadership role in hospitality previously. This can be supervisory or management and in any kind of venue. You will need to be comfortable writing legible shift reports and managing emails without undue difficulty or time. Most important to us, though, are your values and attitude.

You'll have a focus on work and career with a desire to learn and progress through hard work and a natural ability to connect with guests. You'll be a strong communicator, able to understand human situations in hospitality environments and navigate them calmly. You'll be positive about front of house work and the places in which you have done it having been able to communicate constructively with guests, owners and colleagues throughout. Ideally you'll enjoy eating out and have opinions on what makes good service and how you've taken knowledge from other restaurants or venues and applied it to your approach. You’ll understand how training works and doesn’t work in hospitality – which will make you very accepting of the idea of starting as a runner! You'll be unselfish and supportive of colleagues.

This job is located in Yarmouth overlooking the Harbour, you'll need to have your own transport or live locally. We can consider applicants who wish to move to the Isle of Wight but we cannot assist in relocating and would ask that you consider the implications of moving before applying.
