Job Title

Marine Energy Electrical Engineer – Electrical Design and Powertrain

Location

We are based in Cowes on the Isle of Wight and you will need to be able to commute at least 2 or 3 days a week. This role involves travel across the UK, as well as internationally including occasional overnight stays.

Job Purpose

As a Marine Energy Electrical Engineer with a focus on design and powertrain, you will play a key role in the development and optimization of electrical systems architecture for tidal & wave energy along with their associated sensors. This includes designing powertrain schematics, integrating electrical systems with tidal & wave systems, ensuring efficient power generation, transmission, and distribution in marine environments. You will collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to deliver innovative, reliable, and cost-effective solutions that meet regulatory and client requirements.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the electrical design of tidal & wave energy systems, including powertrain components such as generators, converters, transformers, and cabling, ensuring compliance with industry standards and environmental considerations.
  • Conduct power engineering analyses, including load flow, fault studies, and system stability assessments for tidal & wave power generation.
  • Manage multiple design projects simultaneously, prioritizing tasks to meet conflicting deadlines while maintaining high standards of quality and safety.
  • Produce detailed technical reports, specifications, and documentation to support project delivery, regulatory approvals, and client presentations.
  • Communicate design decisions effectively to clients, colleagues, and stakeholders, justifying choices based on technical, commercial, and operational rationale.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams (e.g., mechanical engineers, project managers, and contractors) to integrate electrical designs into overall tidal & wave energy systems.
  • Negotiate with suppliers, contractors, and clients on technical and commercial aspects to achieve optimal outcomes.
  • Contribute to innovation in tidal & wave energy technologies, including R&D for improved powertrain efficiency and grid integration.
  • Travel across the UK/Internationally for site visits, installations, and meetings, with occasional overnight stays as required.
  • Ensure all work adheres to health, safety, and environmental regulations, promoting a culture of continuous improvement.

Essential Qualifications and Experience

  • Degree in Electrical Engineering (or equivalent qualification).
  • Previous experience in electrical design, ideally within the electrical contracting, utilities, or renewable energy sectors.
  • Strong technical knowledge of power engineering, including high-voltage systems, power electronics, and grid connections.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple design projects and deliver under conflicting deadlines.
  • High level of communication skills, with the ability to justify design decisions to clients and colleagues.
  • Capable of producing high-quality written technical reports.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills, with proficiency in IT tools (e.g., MS Office) and excellent spoken and written English.
  • Ability to clearly communicate technical and commercial information, negotiate effectively, and contribute to a dynamic team environment.
  • Adaptable, resilient, and proactive approach to work.
  • Willingness to travel across the UK / Internationally with occasional overnight stays.
  • Holds a full UK driving licence.
  • Right to Work in the UK without limitation.

Desirable Qualifications and Experience

  • A postgraduate qualification in Power Systems (or related field).
  • Working towards or holding professional registration (IENG/CENG) with the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) or an equivalent body.

  • Proficiency in relevant software tools (e.g., ETAP, MATLAB, or similar for power system modelling – training provided if needed).
